The Cancer Recovery Pyramid

The Cancer Recovery Pyramid reflects the Foundations healing model, which emphasizes a holistic approach to healing and survival, involving mind, body and spirit. This roadmap to recovery focuses on six areas; medical, nutrition, exercise, attitude, support, meaning and purpose. It is founded on the belief that we are each unique and have untapped healing powers available to us.

Whilst, as some have suggested, cancer patients might have responded to medical treatment alone, this holistic approach maximizes the chances for those diagnosed with cancer to respond positively and recover. Also by developing a healthier lifestyle, the quality of life can be greatly improved for whatever time a person has, enabling them to develop a greater control over their life and the choices that they make.

Cancer Recovery Pyramid
Medical
Most cancer survivors started and completed at least one course of conventional medical treatment. Surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, in that order, were the treatments of choice. Survivors chose traditional medicine as one element of their recovery program. Eighty percent sought a second opinion and seventy percent changed their doctor at least once.

Nutrition
Eighty percent of survivors made "major" changes to their diet, viewing food as part of their total treatment plan. Most moved to a more plant-based diet. Foods of choice became fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and pure water.

Exercise
Most survivors considered some form of regular exercise to be an important part of their recovery program.

Attitude
The beliefs about and perceptions of cancer and recovery changed for most survivors. Eighty percent experienced a change from equating cancer with death to a more positive position that cancer might or might not mean death, which also affected their treatment choices. Whilst recognizing the seriousness of their diagnosis, most thought that their own self-help efforts helped towards their recovery. They had a positive attitude and made the best lifestyle and treatment choices to help them recover. A reason to live or purpose in life was regarded as being very important and most found a greater level of awareness.

Support
Most survivors regarded support from family and friends as being a major part of their return to health. For most men this support came from their spouse, whilst for women it was found equally from their spouse and friends. Many survivors also avoided negative relationships during at least part of their recovery.

Meaning and Purpose
Many survivors reported forgiving and learning from past perceived wrongs as being an important part of recovery. Whilst not forgetting or approving past wrongs done to them, survivors focused on becoming detached from feelings of hostility freeing energy for their healing process. A sense of a higher purpose and meaning to life and a deeper appreciation of the preciousness of life were perceived by most survivors. Many also found a deeper sense of spirituality and a connection to a higher power.
